Introducing you to typography for print and web…

Typography is the art and craft of type design. The first role of typography at EASIserv.com is functionality. The key to this is ensuring legibility and creating a hierarchy of messages in order of importance for your business. A user should not have to struggle to read an article and find the piece of information they are searching for, so good design and legibility should go hand in hand.

Within EASIserv.com we cater for both web and print; distinguishing how type works effectively in each medium is vital for a successful design. The roots of good typography began in print design and more specifically in type-foundries. If you were to make the smallest error in these print presses it would be replicated on a mass scale when it went to print, so attention to detail became imperative for print designers.

Here at EASIserv.com we predominantly design for the web, where sans-serif fonts are the bread and butter for the majority of textual copy. Sans-serif fonts do not have any serifs at all (“sans” being French for “without”). Sans-serif fonts are the most appropriate family for use online and remain readable at low resolutions with their simpler letter forms containing less detail. In the book ‘The principles of beautiful web design’ the virtues of sans serif fonts in web design are also preached by world renowned web designer Jason Beaird who says:

“Although serif fonts are still used extensively, the popularity and versatility of the sans serif font category continues to grow. These types of fonts have a cleaner and more contemporary feel.“

Within today’s websites you can’t get away from Verdana — it’s probably the most-used font on the web. This is almost certainly due to its high legibility, which actually improves as the text gets smaller. Also small, sharp Arial looks professional and you can fit a large amount of text on-screen at once.

Although there is still a place for serif-fonts - and we will often use these for businesses that want to convey a sense of history or class. (e.g. see Mosaic Restoration). One of our favourite serifed fonts is Georgia. It looks best at around 14 pixels. Times New Roman is a font designed for print that really shouldn’t be used online.

If you would like to see how typography can work for you to clearly convey the message of your business for print or web please don’t hesitate to contact EASIserv.com and enquire about our branding or web design packages.
