A big happy 15th Birthday today to the Mosaic web browser. On April 22, 1993, a group of students at the University of Illinois released the initial version of the Mosaic web browser and 15 years later who amongst the billions of browsers across the world can readily recall any of the names of those pioneers - Marc Andreessen and Eric Bina? But of course most do remember the names of those pesky guys from Stanford that came along a little bit later don't we? C'est la Vie!
The Mosaic browser was later commercialised by a company called Spyglass and Microsoft licensed Spyglass Mosaic in 1995 and built Internet Explorer version 1.0 for Windows 95: for those who follow the Microsoft machinations they have just quietly released their Beta 1 version Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) and still own the major share of the browser market - despite everybody and their brother bemoaning its non-compliance.
Here at EASIserv.com at least 2 of our number well-remember being part of the Mosaic Beta test group back in '93 and struggling to come to terms with it all and what it might lead to - and we're happy to raise a celebratory glass to cheer those pioneers on their 15th Birthday. And we all know what usually happens to pioneers, don't we? They usually ended-up face down in the dirt with an arrow in their back!
