Domain Name Questions and Answers

Q1. What is a Domain Name?

Every computer connected to the internet is identified by a unique Internet Protocol (IP) address (such as 255.132.245.12). It quickly became apparent that these numbers weren't too meaningful and nobody could remember them anyway: so as the net grew in popularity it became important to have more memorable ways of identifying the servers. Hence the domain name - unique identifiers that point to specific IP addresses. You'll sometimes hear them referred to as Top Level Domains (TLDs) or Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) - but don't worry, they all refer to the same thing.

Q2. What domain name should I register?

When registering your domain name, go for something memorable and individual. You may wish to consider registering your domain name in as many suffixes as possible to avoid the possibility of competitors registering variations of your name.

Q3. How much does a domain name cost ?

The cost of a name depends on which suffix you choose. Dot co dot uk's are generally cheaper than dot coms. Our prices (see above) usually cover a 2 year period and include all Network Information Centre (NIC) fees so there is nothing else to pay [see Q4 below].

Q4. What is the NIC?

NIC is an abbreviated term, which stands for, Network Information Centre. The NIC authority is appointed by ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) to carry out all registrations in their particular country.

Q5. Why do I have to 'renew' my domains and how do I know when I need to do this?

Upon registering a domain the NIC authority determines how long that domain will remain your property for. This is usually 1, 2, 5 or 10 years. You will receive a 'renewal notice' from easiserv.com at least 1 month in advance from the expiry date of your domain. You will then have the choice to either renew or delete your domain name.
